December is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month

December is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month December is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of impaired driving and promoting safe driving practices. This initiative serves as a crucial reminder for all of us to prioritize safety on the roads.

Driving Safely and Sober

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs poses a significant risk not only to the driver but also to passengers, pedestrians, and other road users. Impaired driving can lead to severe accidents, injuries, and even fatalities. It’s essential to understand that even small amounts of alcohol can impair judgment and reaction times.

As we celebrate this month, let’s commit to making responsible choices. If you plan to drink, consider alternative transportation options such as rideshares, designated drivers, or public transportation. Remember, your life and the lives of others depend on your choices behind the wheel.

Here are some tips to help you stay safe on the road:

1. Know Your Medications:
Don’t drive until you understand how new medications affect you. Even prescription drugs can impair your ability to drive safely. Wait a day or two after starting a new medication to see how it makes you feel. If you must drive during this time, use ride-sharing services.

2. Plan Ahead for Parties:  Designate a driver. If you’re going to a party where alcohol will be served, make sure you have a designated driver who will be responsible for getting everyone home safely.

3. Prioritize Sleep:
Driving tired is just as dangerous as driving drunk. Get a good night’s sleep or take a nap before driving long distances.

4. Put Your Phone Away:
Distracted driving is deadly. Pull over to make calls or send texts. Don’t risk your life or the lives of others for a quick message.

5. Listen to Your Body:
If you don’t feel well, don’t drive. If you have a headache, are feeling faint, or simply don’t feel like you can concentrate, find a safe alternative to driving.

Remember: You are responsible for your actions behind the wheel. Make the right choices to keep yourself and others safe this holiday season.
