Starting January 1, 2025, Florida will implement a new law, HB 3, that significantly restricts social media access for minors. This legislation, signed by Governor Ron DeSantis in March, introduces the following key provisions:
- Age Restrictions:
Children under the age of 14 will be prohibited from creating social media accounts. - Parental Consent:
Teens aged 14 and 15 must obtain parental consent before joining any social media platform. - Account Deletion:
Social media companies are required to delete existing accounts belonging to users under the specified age limit. - Age Verification:
The law mandates age verification processes on platforms that may pose risks to minors.
Despite these regulations, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody has indicated that enforcement of the law against major social media platforms will be paused until a court rules on a preliminary injunction. A hearing regarding this matter is scheduled for February.
